Data-in-Use

"I now have a cost-effective tool that helps me do my job more efficiently and with greater peace of mind." Tom Bowers Manager, Information Security Operations
Fortune 100 Pharmaceutical

Ensuring protection of critical information assets is a problem with tremendous reach. Not only must action be taken to protect content at the network boundary and while data is at rest in repositories, but also while the data is being used on a workstation. The user workstation presents a unique challenge in that numerous information security threats exist and evolve at rapid speeds. Numerous I/O channels exist that provide a means by which sensitive information can leave the organization—including USB drives, music devices, printers, and network protocols. The same level of security must be employed broadly across the enterprise and encompass the endpoint not only while the user is connected to the corporate network, but more importantly, when the user is not connected to the corporate network, where policies are infinitely more difficult to enforce.

Reconnex Data-in-Use is the ideal platform to extend the broad information security capabilities of Reconnex Data-in-Motion and Data-at-Rest to the endpoint to ensure comprehensive coverage. By providing coverage for the most commonly-used I/O channels through which sensitive information could leak, Reconnex Data-in-Use helps ensure that your business maintains its competitive edge and compliance with regulation. The workstation software agent synchronizes its configuration with the Reconnex Data-in-Use server to provide identical coverage whether the user is on the network or off of the network. Reconnex Data-in-Use can interact with other Reconnex solution components to receive fingerprint data from sensitive information that requires explicit protection.

Reconnex Data-in-Use helps you to protect your sensitive information, intellectual property, and privacy data on your corporate workstation. By providing visibility and control over the proliferation of the information that is critical to your business, Reconnex Data-in-Use helps minimize data leakage incidents while also providing you the ability to correct behavior. Incidents of data leakage continue to make headline news—costing enterprise organizations hundreds of thousands or even millions of dollars—not to mention the impact to the company reputation.

Consider the following real-world examples:

  • In a highly publicized event, clothing manufacturer Gap Inc., a major clothing retailer, found that personal information for over 800,000 job applicants had been exposed due to a laptop theft.
  • Data warehousing leader ChoicePoint admitted that it had disclosed the personal information of over 140,000 individuals, which led to over 750 known cases of identity theft and fraud.
  • Insurance specialist Aflac experienced a laptop theft that not only compromised personally-identifiable information on over 150,000 people, but also their insurance records.
  • Each day opportunistic workers scan competitor job sites, looking for a new job with potential pay increase and growth opportunities. In many cases, intellectual property is attached alongside their resume when submitting their application to the competitor. For instance, C/C++ developers may attach source code from an unreleased product as an example of their ability, unknowingly exposing sensitive product information to a potentially fierce competitor.
  • According to a study performed by a leading security vendor, 58% of workers have admitted to sending company confidential information to a public webmail service such as Gmail or Yahoo. Similarly, Internet users are rapidly adopting Web 2.0 technologies such as wikis and blogs as a means of disseminating data or expressing their opinion—which may contain data that could put your business at risk.

The Reconnex Data-in-Use solution helps organizations protect information critical to their business on endpoints regardless of the ability of the endpoint to connect to the corporate network. The Reconnex Data-in-Use solution extends the information protection capabilities of Reconnex data-in-motion and data-at-rest to the workstation to help minimize proliferation of sensitive information, maintain compliance with industry and government regulation, and ensure acceptable use of corporate resources.

The Reconnex Data-in-Motion solution provides the following benefits to your organization:

  • Better Adherence to Compliance and Regulations: Iinappropriate proliferation of privacy data, such as patient information, financial data, or customer information, are recorded and can be blocked.  Reconnex identifies situations that put compliance with regulation at jeopardy, which helps minimize fees associated with compliance violations while reducing time to visibility, improving time to remediation, improving accuracy, and minimizing cost of compliance discovery.
  • Understand, Identify, and Protect Intellectual Property: Reconnex enables organizations to adapt as intellectual property or its sensitivity changes. With Reconnex, identifying intellectual property is streamlined, thereby allowing you better visibility and control in a shorter amount of time.  Fingerprints from intellectual property, or other sensitive data, can be armed on the endpoint for explicit protection.
  • Extend Corporate Information Protection to Outside the Office: By employing a powerful endpoint agent, organizations can realize the same information protection benefits provided for tethered systems on systems that may or may not be connected to the corporate network. This provides peace of mind whether the user is in the office, at a wireless hotspot, at an airport, in a hotel, or even at home.

The Reconnex Data-in-Use solution includes the following technology features:

  • Architecture for Performance: Reconnex provides a high-performance, intelligent crawler architecture that helps minimize the amount of time necessary to identify compliance violations, acceptable-use issues, or proliferation of intellectual property and other sensitive information.
  • Broadest I/O Channel Support: The Reconnex endpoint agent supports the broadest set of I/O channels, thus providing the most complete coverage from data leak channels: USB drives, music players, printers, HTTP, HTTPS, FTP, SMTP, instant messenger, Outlook, and re-writable media (CD/DVD).
  • Comprehensive Leak Protection Policies: Incidents can be logged, alerts can be generated, or the activity can be blocked altogether.
  • Powerful Document Registration Capabilities: Reconnex allows you to specify what information is sensitive and requires explicit protection and can propagate this information to the endpoint. The endpoint agent will then analyze and fingerprint this data, and explicitly protect it and any content variations should they be encountered.
  • Non-intrusive, Lightweight, Near-invisible Installation: The Reconnex Endpoint agent is extremely lightweight, consuming far less disk capacity, CPU cycles, and memory capacity than other endpoint agents and other security products. The agent is nearly invisible to the use—obscured from view—and thus provides more security.
