RECONNEX ADDS NEW CAPABILITIES FOR PROTECTING INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY AND PRIVATE DATA BEFORE, DURING, AND AFTER EXPOSURE
Reconnex 5.0 Discovers, Monitors, Captures, and Controls All Known and Unknown Data Traversing the Network, and Prevents Private Data and IP from Leaving the Network
CORE NEWS FACTS
- Reconnex is introducing Reconnex 5.0 of its iGuard 3600 appliance, which can detect risk to corporate information at each stage of exposure: before exposure occurs, while it happens, and even after exposure has already taken place.
- Defending against threats at each stage of risk exposure is challenging. An information protection system must be able to secure sensitive data at rest, before a threat becomes real; protect it during transmission, when the risk of abuse or misuse is highest; and help IT identify and address unforeseen threats after they occur.
- The protection of intellectual property (IP) is emerging as a market requirement; simply protecting private or confidential data is no longer sufficient.
- While protecting fixed-format data such as Social Security and credit card numbers is straightforward, intellectual property (IP) such as source code, which is complex and does not have a fixed format, cannot be protected by simple techniques.
- The value of protected information can be enormous; IP such as source code, legal documents, or drug formulations can be worth millions of dollars.
- The Reconnex 5.0 includes these features:
- The ability to discover valuable IP in data at rest
- Expanded capabilities for monitoring information in motion across the network
- The ability to block inappropriate information from leaving the network
- The ability to manage multiple Reconnex systems from a central location.
- The Reconnex 5.0 is the only comprehensive solution that employs multiple techniques to identify and secure both complex and fixed-format data at rest and in motion during transmission. The appliance also provides a means to reconstruct how a breach took place – who released what data over what communication channel.
- Reconnex has developed over two-dozen patented technologies to provide more layers of protection to more types of content than any other solution.
- Reconnex is also introducing its new inSight Console, which manages multiple iGuards from one central location.
Discover. IP is a concept, not a number or a piece of text with a fixed format. Reconnex 5.0 has the unique ability to discover highly variable IP content and its context at rest, before it traverses the network, as well as during and after it traverses the network.
- A unique concept-vectoring technique that goes beyond key word and key phrase matching allows users to break complex or amorphous ideas down a set of ideas, communities, and channels that the iGuard can search for.
- Over time, enterprises can use concept vectoring coupled with the iGuard’s capture capabilities to hone flexible and abstract concepts as they learn the words, phrases, languages, and circumstances that define their IP and its risk scenarios.
- Other discovery techniques the Reconnex 5.0 employs include the following:
- Automatic scanning and registry of sensitive data at rest in repositories or file shares
- Pre-built risk templates that help manage risk by protecting private and confidential information, monitoring compliance, and aiding corporate governance
- A flexible rule/policy creation platform
To provide complete document management, Reconnex recently received the EMC Corporation’s “Designed for Documentum” logo designation, a mark of quality and value that customers insist on in enterprise applications.
Monitor. To provide the highest level of accuracy, Reconnex 5.0 expands the real-time monitoring of data in motion to encompass multiple analysis techniques.
- The iGuard’s monitoring capabilities are automatically armed with the biometrics of protected information, enabling it to recognize such information when it traverses the network.
- Reconnex 5.0 is the only solution that can monitor all ports, protocols, and content types, and because it is highly scalable, it can accurately monitor large gigabit-speed networks with hundreds of thousands of concurrent connections without any impact on network performance.
Capture: The Reconnex iGuard can capture network content in a database that allows for granular forensic and historical inspection, enabling enterprises to detect risk events and data exposure after the fact.
- Capture uses the full set of object and protocol classification vectors to create a high-performance index that is stored with captured data. This index allows for rapid searching of the Capture database using keywords such as Social Security numbers; communications parameters such as the recipient of the content or the protocol used for transmission; content types such as Word file or JPEG image; or more complex policies, including concept maps, that an enterprise creates for its unique environment.
- Advanced data mining capabilities allow IT to retrieve specific classification information, such as the source or destination of a traffic stream, including specific user or country.
- Capture allows IT to correlate current and past risk events, detect risk trends, and identify threats that were not pre-defined.
- When they discover new threats, enterprises can create policies that arm iGuard-Discover to identify and protect data at rest and iGuard-Monitor to identify and protect data in motion.
Prevent. Reconnex 5.0 incorporates new prevention capabilities that enable it to protect IP and other sensitive and private data during and after transmission.
- A new high-performance blocking capability leverages existing IT elements such as network switches, web proxies, encryption servers, and email gateways to prevent information from leaving the network.
- Real-time alerting of administrators and managers, as well as end-user notification, are supported, as are granular, policy-based controls.
- The capture capability provides a feedback loop to improve catch rate and lower false positives.
- The enterprise can take action based on analysis of data at rest and in motion.
- Reconnex has recently integrated with several leading network security companies to provide prevention capabilities including PostX, IronPort, Barracuda Networks, Sendmail, and Extreme Networks.
Control. Reconnex 5.0 includes the first release of the inSight Console.
- This new multi-system management capability supports multiple iGuard appliances from a central location, enabling Reconnex 5.0 to protect large, geographically dispersed networks.
- Reconnex 5.0 provides unified reporting and diagnostic information to simplify administration and control.
- The solution provides role-based, designated access to security functions for full remediation and case management.
- Users can define simple and complex security policies from a central location; define what actions an iGuard should take, such as alerting, blocking, and reporting; and configure the iGuard.
Pricing and Availability: Reconnex 5.0 is available immediately for the Reconnex iGuard appliance. Pricing starts at $47,995
COMMENTARY
- Randy Barr, Chief Security Officer, WebEx Communications – “Security is a top priority at WebEx. The iGuard protects all kinds of sensitive data, from common, fixed-format data to complex intellectual property. Reconnex defends against threats at each stage of risk exposure — before it occurs, while it is happening, and after it has already taken place.”
- Trent Henry, Senior Analyst, Burton Group – “Protecting specific sensitive information such as Social Security and credit card numbers is an essential part of information protection, but it isn't the whole story. Also critical is monitoring for unstructured intellectual property, including source code, trade secrets, executive communications, and related information. Ideally, enterprises will choose a network content-filtering solution that can discover, monitor, capture, control, and ultimately prevent such amorphous data from leaving the corporate network.”
- Scott Crawford, Senior Analyst, Enterprise Management Associates – “The Reconnex iGuard addresses one of the most challenging—but also the most significant—requirements for organizations seeking to mitigate business risks: the recognition of content such as intellectual property, which may have little or no structure but regardless is among the most important and sensitive of business assets. This recognition capability is critical to mitigating risks arising from the improper handling of information that could threaten the business itself.”
- Faizel Lakhani, Vice President of Marketing, Reconnex – “Enterprises know today that IP is difficult to identify precisely. That’s why we created a complete solution that couples the rich content-detection capabilities of Reconnex 5.0 with our unique before, during, and after approach to information protection.”
