Sirva Deploys Reconnex IGuard to Protect Private Data, Comply with Privacy Regulations

Leading Relocation Company Uses Content-Monitoring Appliance to Detect, Analyze, and Remediate Risks to Network Security

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., March 27, 2006—Reconnex, the expert in discovering both known and unknown electronic risks, today announced that SIRVASM, Inc. (NYSE: SIR), a leader in providing relocation solutions in more than 40 countries, is using the Reconnex iGuard content-monitoring appliance to protect the privacy of its customers and employees and ensure it is in compliance with privacy regulations.  The Reconnex product helps SIRVA comply with a number of federal and state mandates, including the Graham-Leach Bliley Act (GBLA), the Sarbanes-Oxley Act (SOX), and the California SB 1386 privacy act, designed to protect the security, confidentiality, and integrity of personal information the company maintains. With the Reconnex iGuard, which monitors 100 percent of the content traversing the network, SIRVA can find out if unencrypted data is leaving its network and take immediate steps to remediate the situation.

Because a vast amount of traffic crosses its network, SIRVA was looking for an effective way to monitor privacy data, spot issues quickly, and alert on potential policy violations.  After evaluating several other products, the company chose the Reconnex iGuard because of its unique ability to monitor and capture both inbound and outbound data, and because of its detailed reporting system.  The Reconnex iGuard also provides full risk discovery correlation and analysis to both real-time and historical data flows.  Finally, only the Reconnex content-monitoring appliance is port agnostic and protocol independent, allowing 100 percent visibility into electronic threats.

“With the Reconnex solution, I don’t have to worry about data privacy concerns,” said Chuck Shmayel, vice president of infrastructure and security at SIRVA.  “If the Reconnex iGuard appliance reveals that confidential data is leaving our network unencrypted, the transactions get flagged and the appropriate individuals are notified.  I can take immediate action to remediate the situation and at the same time remind the users about our corporate privacy policies.  With Reconnex, I feel my data is secure.”

Content Capture and Analysis Help Enforce Privacy Policies

To comply with federal and state privacy mandates, SIRVA has developed stringent privacy policies, and one of Shmayel’s key responsibilities is to enforce them.  The company blocks Webmail and Instant Messages (IM), but the Reconnex iGuard enables security to find out if any personal information, private data, or intellectual property is flowing in or out of the corporate network via unencrypted emails.  SIRVA can use the product’s risk discovery capabilities to build a complete history of a security incident, including how many people were compromised and where the email went, so security can take action in accord with corporate policies.

The Reconnex product even supports “after-the-fact” risk discovery; SIRVA can perform historical analyses on captured data to detect unknown threats and correlate them with known—i.e., already detected—threats.  Because the Reconnex iGuard stores all content in a rolling 30- to-90-day window, security can build context around incidents by searching for all surrounding network traffic, including information that may or may not have triggered an event.

Ultimately, SIRVA plans to define a long-term retention policy for the data captured by the Reconnex iGuard.  The policy will take into account the full lifecycle of information: how to maintain it, keep it, and archive it.

Reconnex iGuard Reinforces Effectiveness of Security Systems

SIRVA uses several security systems on its network, including Web filtering and blocking, Email spam and virus filtering and blocking, Worm and intrusion prevention monitoring and blocking, and content-filtering systems, to protect the company’s network from threats.  With the Reconnex iGuard, the SIRVA security team can access the information it needs to investigate a problem and reconfigure the company’s filters accordingly.  This saves SIRVA a tremendous amount of time and money.

“Reconnex’s predefined and customized rule sets for regulations such as SOX, GLBA, and SB 1386; corporate governance policies; and network security policies allow companies such as SIRVA to quickly access, query, and search stored content,” said John Peters, CEO at Reconnex.  “The ability to do ad-hoc searches to identify and analyze aberrant transmissions lets our customers pinpoint—and remediate—the root causes of security breaches.”
